First
Half - The Fire began their first ever league game buoyed by recent
performances but came horribly unstuck against a well organised Torpedo
side. With 2 selected players failing to show last minute changes
were forced upon The Fire with a not yet fully fit Dave Schofield
playing his first game in many months although he did not look out
of place in what was a lacklustre all round first half performance
by a subdued Fire side. With just a few minutes gone Torpedo scored
the first of their 7 first half goals with a quality finish from the
edge of the area. The goals kept coming as Torpedo repeatedly carved
open the Fire defence and a succesion of quality finishes ensured
the game was out of reach comfortably before half time. At the other
end Andy Baker spurned some good opportunities and with Torpedo in
an unforgiving mode at the other end it was to be a miserable morning
for The Fire.

Second
Half - The Fire started the second half better than they had the first
and created a couple of half chances. Once again though they were
left to rue missed opportunities as Torpedo soon celebrated their
8th, The Fire did pull a goal back midway through a much more even
second half when a long range free kick by Andy Baker found its way
into the roof of the net. Straight from the kick off however Torpedo
won a corner and the unfortunate Matt Jones headed the ball into his
own net to make it 9-1. His blushes were spared somewhat though as
later in the half a carbon copy of the goal occured at the other end
with a Torpedo defender heading Lee Knott's inswinging corner into
his net. At 9-2 both sides had chances but it was Torpedo who had
the final say with a low drive giving them double figures and completing
a miserable start to the season for The Fire.
