After a disjointed pre-season the Fire were looking to start their league campaign with a home win over Westlands but it was the visitors who applied the early pressure as the Fire struggled to put any passes together. Despite Westlands dominating proceedings they weren't creating chances and their opening goal had a huge element of luck to it as a mishit cross found its way into the top corner. Buoyed by their good fortune Westlands looked to increase the lead and James Gifford, in net for the Fire, had to make a couple of decent saves.
Half Time 0-1

The Fire started the second half brightly and passed the ball around well. The Westlands goal seemed to lead a charmed life though as chances went begging with the best chance falling to Lee Knott who hit his shot against a defender on the line with the keeper well out of position. It looked like the Fire wold never score but with just a few minutes left Dave Barnes headed home Robert Green's curling free kick to give the Fire a deserved equaliser. With the clock ticking down both sides pushed for a winner and Westlands squandered two great chances to steal all the points.
