| The Fire expected a tough league match against opposition that had threatened to come back from 3-0 down against them just two weeks ago in the cup match and so it was to prove as both sides contested a fairly even first half. With the Fire kicking uphill on Wilmslow's sloping pitch and with the sun in their eyes it was always going to be a tough half but the Fire struck first midway through the half with Lee Knott scoring a stunning volley from an incredibly acute angle after a delicate chipped through ball from Mike Bridge. The sweetly struck volley was past the keeper in an instant and crashed into the net after hitting the underside of the bar. The goal made Marco Van Bastens stunning Euro 88 goal look like a simple tap in. Wilmslow equalised shortly before the break after the Fire failed to clear a throw in and the ball fell kindly for a Wilmslow striker who lashed home. |
Half
Time 1-1 |
The 2nd half saw the Fire kicking downhill and they retook the lead very quickly after Shaun Lloyd-Griffiths pounced from close range after the Wilmslow keeper spilled a Danny Moss free kick. Lee Knott soon added a thrid with a chipped finsih from the edge of the area gave the Wilmslow keeper no chance and he nearly grabbed a hat trick as he rifled a free kick narrowly wide minutes later. With the Fire on top Shaun Lloyd-Griffiths squandered the chance to make the game safe sending a shot wide from a good position. Wilmslow, as they did in the cup match, never gave up and pulled a goal back after a cross evaded several players and was turned in at the far post but despite pressure they couldn't find an equaliser and the Fire held on for a deserved win. |
